Arguably the most enjoyable entry in Marvel’s Phase 4 films, Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is expected to get a follow-up at some point – the main question is when.
Last month came stirrings that something was happening with a report indicating the film had been put on the Marvel Studios production calendar and development was “officially underway” with plans for shooting to be laid out soon.
A few days later, the film’s star Simu Liu teased the possibility of his character interacting with other MCU heroes, saying fans “might see something sooner than you think”.
Now, out promoting his return to cinemas with the romance film “One True Loves,” Liu spoke with Collider and was asked about the pressures and expectations that come with playing Shang-Chi again in the wake of the first film.
He says with it being a sequel, it immediately makes things a bit easier as “you’re under the most pressure when something is unproven”. With the sequel, he’s more just excited to get back to it – but wouldn’t elaborate on when that might be:
“Going into a sequel feels exciting. It doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s a pressure to perform or a pressure to exceed. It feels like we’ve established a world and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about.
And then, we’re getting to revisit some things, but also show the viewer new things. We’ll deliver all of the amazing action that we were celebrated for on the first movie, but then also hopefully explore new sides of Shaun’s character and the characters around him. That is, of course, if we can still afford Michelle Yeoh. She’s on top of the world and just the queen of everything.”
Yeoh played Ying Nan, the guardian of the mythical dimension Ta Lo, in the film and is coming off her Best Actress win for “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.
Liu is keeping busy and has films like “Simulant” and the “Barbie” movie on the way this year. He is currently filming “Grand Death Lotto” alongside John Cena and his “Shang-Chi” co-star Awkwafina.
