Serkis Would Return As Snoke In “Star Wars”

Lucasfilm

“The Lord of the Rings” alum Andy Serkis popped up in the “Star Wars” universe as Supreme Leader Snoke in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

The character, a tall being with a mangled visage, appeared to be serving in place of Emperor Palpatine in the same way Kylo Ren was in place of Darth Vader.

Then with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” the comparison went out the window when the character was. abruptly and unexpectedly killed off as he was cut in half with a lightsaber.

That decision upset Serkis. Speaking with GQ recently the actor, who provided the voice and motion capture work for the character, talked about his performance and how the decision emotionally impacted him:

“Let me just phrase it like this. When I went in to read The Last Jedi, [I spent] the first 30 pages thinking, ‘This is the most incredible character.’ Then I turned the page: ‘And then Snoke gets sliced in half.’ And I was gutted. Gutted. I actually really love that character. And I’m putting it out there: I wouldn’t mind if he came back.”

Could he though? “The Mandalorian” and the various shows there are set a few years after “Return of the Jedi” and well before ‘Force Awakens’. Details of Snoke’s origins are still vague beyond ‘Rise of Skywalker’ retconning him into being a creation of Emperor Palpatine to serve as a proxy.

The second season of ‘Mandalorian’ seemed to hint at Snoke’s genesis in its episode “The Siege” with the discovery of failed experiments involving cloning and Force-sensitive blood.

Serkis meanwhile showed up elsewhere in “Star Wars” in human form as Kino Loy in the prison-set multi-episode arc of the series “Andor”.
