“Rick & Morty” Staffers On Roiland Fallout

Adult Swim

One of the biggest stories of the past month has been the fallout for “Rick and Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland as numerous streamers, networks and studios have cut ties with him professionally following felony domestic abuse charges coming to light.

Now a new feature story at THR has gone into what has been going on at the various series Roiland has his name attached to. It turns out things haven’t been good for years now.

The report indicates there has been tension behind-the-scenes of “Rick and Morty” between Roiland and fellow co-creator Dan Harmon for some time, with multiple sources indicating the two had not been on speaking terms for years.

Attempts by a mediator to repair the relationship between the two had failed, but worked enough for both to sign off on the massive 70-episode renewal from Adult Swim in May 2018.

In addition, Roiland’s presence in the writing room had allegedly caused issues since the start of the second season and at some point during the third season he “simply stopped showing up”.

Their sources indicate that other than voice work which he records from home, Roiland has apparently not had any meaningful creative presence on any of the series with his name on them in some time.

The stories continue with some of his former colleagues saying they haven’t heard from him in years, whilst a number of staffers on “Rick and Morty,” “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” reportedly claim to have never actually met Roiland – even over Zoom.

Despite all that’s happened, the show is soldiering on with new voice actors set to take over Roiland’s various roles. Production on the seventh season is well underway with at least three more seasons after that planned. The full story can be found up at THR.
