Back in August 2021 around the time of the release of Shawn Levy’s “Free Guy,” its star Ryan Reynolds indicated a sequel to the action comedy was officially in the works.
That first film has the “Deadpool” actor playing as a non-playable video game character named Guy in a popular game called ‘Free City’. Once he realizes he is living in a fictional game, Guy sets off on a quest to become the game’s hero.
A year-and-a-half on and little progress has been made it seems. In fact, Reynolds cast doubt on the film this weekend during an appearance in the U.K. on Saturday evening as part of the Just For Laughs festival.
Reynolds appeared in conversation with “Deadpool 2” co-star Rob Delaney who asked whether he was planning a sequel to any of his films. He responded:
“There is the potential to do a sequel to ‘Free Guy,’ which would be fun. I would love it. But also like, does everything f—ing have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.
So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one’. No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”
Joe Keery, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Taika Waititi and Utkarsh Ambudkar co-starred in the first “Free Guy” which made $331.5 million at the box-office.
