New “Jurassic World” Targets $142M Launch

Universal Pictures

Despite being the worst-reviewed of the six “Jurassic” movies to date, “Jurassic World: Dominion” is exceeding expectations at the box-office.

Domestically the film is now on track for a $142 million opening, only 4% off the debut of the prior film “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” which opened to $148 million in 2018. ‘Dominion’ is also set for the best opening in the pandemic era for a non-superhero title.

Internationally the film is headed for a $175 million weekend haul from new territories and holdovers for a total overseas haul of $244 million through Sunday and a worldwide gross of $386 million.

While the critic’s reviews are down to just 31% (4.9/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is up to 80% on that site’s audience score and an A- CinemaScore in exit polls.

Meanwhile “Top Gun: Maverick” is set for a third weekend of $50 million, a drop of 44%. By Sunday the Tom Cruise-led film is set to be up to $393.3 million domestically and is likely to overtake “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” early next week – despite being open for only half as long as that film.
