Big news about Ghostbusters, confirmed! First of all a new animated Netflix TV series is in the works. Now Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan have confirmed a follow-up movie is deep in development, going by the working title Firehouse. Kenan told The Hollywood Reporter:
“We’re writing as quickly as we can. We had the story before we finished Afterlife. And we have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel.”
They also confirmed that Ernie Hudson will return as Winston Zeddemore. The character, and his highly successful company, will be a big part of the sequel.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife ended up grossing $205 million worldwide on a £75 million budget. This was considered strong, given the length of time that had passed a since the originals, the negative reaction to the disastrous Ghostbusters 2016, and the lingering effects of the COVID pandemic. It was a hit with critics and scored good marks from audiences who appreciated the links to the original movies.
A Dark Horse comic is also coming that will fill the gaps between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the upcoming sequel.
There is also a Ghostbusters animated movie spinning up at Sony Pictures Animation. Directors Jennifer Kluska (Hotel Transylvania: Transformania) and Chris Prynoski will work with writer Brenda Hsueh on that.
And if a horse is worth flogging, it’s worth flogging to death, so Ghostbusters VR Academy is coming. This will be a a training simulator VR video game and will come out before the end of this year.
Dan Akroyd is probably vibrating, softly, in ecstasy.
