Two months after it hit cinemas, “John Wick: Chapter 4” came to digital the other day and is poised for its disc debut shortly. In the wake of the events of the film, questions have lingered as to where the franchise goes next.
We do know there’s a prequel limited series titled “The Continental” coming later this year and an already shot Ana de Armas-led spin-off film called “Ballerina” due next year. A fifth main entry though seems a long shot judging by comments made by star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski.
Now however, as part of Lionsgate’s Q4 2023 earnings call, Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake says that a fifth “John Wick” film remains in early development according to ComicBook.com.
Not only that, but the plan is to aggressively expand the franchise into other arenas as well – including a major video game release. Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake says:
“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television [and] really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite [for] by the audience.
What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including John Wick 5 and including television series. The Continental will be airing soon.
And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, [it] will be organic – will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”
Len Wiseman helms “Ballerina” which is due out sometime in 2024.
