FAWLTY TOWERS Getting A Reboot

Fawlty Towers is a staple of British comedy. There were only 12 episodes, but each one of them was classic, funny, and timeless. This was made at a time when people could laugh at things.

The original series of Fawlty Towers was made in 1975 and written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, who were married at the time. I read a story that the Monty Python team was filming in Torquay, South West England, and stayed at a hotel where the manager was just like Basil Fawlty.

The rest of the team headed back to London, but Cleese and Booth stayed on at the hotel and then created Basil based on this real-life manager.

It now turns out that Cleese will be back as Basil, reprising the role and writing, but this time with his daughter Camilla Cleese.

Camilla Cleese...I know, right?!?!
Camilla Cleese…I know, right?!?!

The reboot is going to be by Rob Reiner’s Castle Rock Entertainment and will focus on Basil and his estranged daughter trying to navigate the modern world as they try to run Fawlty Towers again. Cleese said that a meeting with one of the show’s producers, Matthew George, was:

“…one of the best creative sessions I can remember.”

Cleese has been very outspoken about the lack of creativity in Hollywood and called out the BBC about their creative decisions. If he is back writing Fawlty Towers, does that mean he won’t be pulling any punches?

A reboot of Fawlty Towers might be interesting, but it also might be a huge disaster.
