At the end of April, we posted about the possibility of a Face/Off sequel being made with Nick Cage stating “some phone calls” were being made. Fans can rest easy, that’s exactly what we’re getting.
There were rumors that a remake was happening, but nothing official was ever said. Now those involved are working on a bonafide Face/Off sequel. This time, the plan is for the movie to be helmed by Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong, You’re Next and The Guest). A good choice to follow up John Woo.
For those living under a rock for the past 25 years, Face/Off has John Travolta and Nick Cage literally swapping faces (sounds like a sex act). Travolta’s Sean Archer is a federal agent who replaces his face with his arch enemy, terrorist Castor Troy, played by Cage. He does this in order to stop a terrorist act. Troy, however, wakes from an induced coma and puts Archer’s face on himself. The two then battle it out with no one around them knowing what’s going on. It’s a silly premise, but sure is a lot of fun with some great action.
Wingard mentioned in a talk with Empire that there’s many reasons to do a sequel. The main one being Cage’s popularity right now.
“He’s just having such a moment. Even before Pig came out, we saw this as a Nicolas Cage movie. That’s become totally the obvious way to go now. A couple of years ago, the studio maybe would have wanted a hot, young, up-and-coming actor or something. Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again.
We’re really honing in on [the script]. We’re not going to share it until everybody’s like, ‘This is the one.’ I think we really got it. It has been probably the most challenging script we’ve ever worked on, for a lot of reasons. There’s so much pressure in wanting to make sure that it lives up to the legacy of that project. But every draft you have these things that just click in, and you’re like, ‘A-ha! That’s really what Face/Off is!’”
As of right now, Cage isn’t on board to do the sequel in any official capacity, but he’s made no bones about being happy to take part. While promoting The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Cage revealed he’d be thrilled to reprise the iconic role.
This is in complete contrast to an earlier interview Cage did with The Hollywood Reporter, were even he wasn’t cool with a remake, saying:
“I have not heard hide nor hair about it. So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about National Treasure 3. It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure. Would [Face/Off 2] be an exciting movie to make? Oh, hell yeah. But John Woo was such a huge voice in that movie. It couldn’t be a remake. I think these filmmakers even said as much — that something like that would have to be a sequel.”
So Cage is happy to be a part of making Face/Off 2 and once the script is complete, they’ll send him a copy and the rest will be history. No word on Travolta returning. If he isn’t, it will be interesting to see what they do, as *SPOILER ALERT* his character survived and Cage’s didn’t.
