Denzel Washington Joins “Gladiator 2”

Sony PIctures

Nearly twenty years after they teamed on “American Gangster,” actor Denzel Washington and filmmaker Ridley Scott are set to re-team for the “Gladiator” sequel at Paramount Pictures.

Washington is in final negotiations to co-star in the film alongside Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan. Mescal is set to lead the film as Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Emperor Commodus.

The story begins with Lucius now a grown man and when Maximus (Russell Crowe) sacrificed himself to save him and his mother, it left a strong impression on the young Lucius. Crowe has already confirmed he’s not involved in the film in any way.

David Scarpa penned the script whilst Scott, Michael Pruss, Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher will produce. Costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max are also returning.

Specifics of Washington’s role are under wraps. DreamWorks will not be involved in the sequel like it was in the first film, with Universal Pictures now able to partner with someone else if it chooses.

The new film follows the 2000 blockbuster which earned more than $460 million in worldwide box office and was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won five including Best Picture.
