“Cobra Kai” Team Set “Duke Nukem” Film

Gearbox Software

Legendary Entertainment (“Dune,” “Godzilla”) has picked up film rights to the “Duke Nukem” game franchise from Gearbox Software with plans for a feature film adaptation.

“Cobra Kai” creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are reportedly on board to produce alongside Jean Julien Baronnet (“Assassin’s Creed”).

Launched in 1991 by Apogee Software, the billion-dollar game franchise started out as 2D platformers which became a mix of first-person and third-person shooters.

The series centers on its titular hero, who is modelled on various 1980s action movies heroes, as he fights an alien invasion in Los Angeles.

Along the way, he travels from strip clubs and movie sets to moon bases and spaceships, dealing with everything up and including the Cycloid Emperor.

A search for a writer is underway with no director yet attached. John Cena was previously attached to a version in development at Paramount years ago.
