Shailene Woodley (“Big Little Lies”), Cara Delevingne (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Noemie Merlant (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”) are set to star in “The Murderous Miss Highsmith, a biopic of celebrated author Patricia Highsmith.
Killer Films, which produced the acclaimed film “Carol” based on Highsmith’s story “The Price of Salt,” is backing the project which reimagines the author’s life as a horror movie.
It focuses on the formative period just before she wrote her most celebrated work “The Talented Mr. Ripley”. That book was partly inspired by her doomed relationships with two women – the author famed for uncompromising personal life including alcoholism, lesbian affairs and misanthropy.
Woodley will play Highsmith with the other two playing those two companions. The author wrote several Tom Ripley books along with works like “Strangers on a Train,” “The Two Faces of January,” “The Cry of the Owl” and “Deep Water” – all of which have been adapted for film.
Alexandra Pechman is aboard to direct the project, marking her first feature following the short film “Thumb”. Christine Vachon and Gabriel Mayers are producing and shooting will take place in Italy this Fall.
The project is not to be confused with “Switzerland,” the Anton Corbijn-directed film which has Helen Mirren attached to play Highsmith at the end of her life in isolation in the Swiss Alps where a young literary agent tries to convince her to write one last Tom Ripley novel.
Woodley has multiple films on the way including “Robots,” “Dumb Money,” “Ferrari” and the currently filming “Killer Heat”.
