Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker Marlon Wayans and Chris Messina, Matthew Maher, Tom Papa and Julius Tennon have all signed on for Ben Affleck’s untitled Nike drama at Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures.
Set in the mid 1980s, Matt Damon will play maverick sneaker salesman Sonny Vaccaro who led a fledgling running shoe company called Nike in a longshot effort to sign on the most transformative athlete in the history of sports to endorse their product: Michael Jordan.
Affleck will portray Nike co-founder Phil Knight in the story which follows how the endorsement, seemingly impossible at the time, would become the most significant relationship between an athletic brand and an athlete and launched the global, multi-billion-dollar contemporary sneaker industry.
Jordan himself is a mythic figure hovering above the movie and never seen. In the film, Sonny tries to reach him by gaining access to those close to him and around him.
Bateman will play Vaccaro’s boss and Nike executive Rob Strasser, Davis will play Michael Jordan’s mother Deloris Jordan, Tucker will be former player and Nike exec Howard White, and Wayans will play college basketball trailblazer George Raveling.
Meanwhile Messina will play Jordan’s original agent David Falk, Maher will play legendary Nike designer Peter Moore, Papa will play former Portland Trail Blazers executive Stu Inman, and Tennon will play Jordan’s father Jame.
Alex Convery wrote the original script which Affleck and Damon have polished. Filming began Monday in Los Angeles with Affleck directing.
